PRESENTATION
The updated European Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder of insomnia were published in December 2023 in Journal of Sleep Research, within a special issue entirely dedicated to the most recent advances on the topic, considering both research and clinical aspects.
Insomnia disorder is prevalent, costly and a risk factor for several mental and somatic disorders. Despite having a significant impact on health and quality of life, poor sleep and insomnia still only receive scarce attention, and results from numerous studies indicate that they often go underdiagnosed and undertreated.
Since the publication of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, insomnia has been recognized as an independent disorder, which follows its own course and responds to its specific treatment whether it presents alone or comorbid with other conditions.
According to scientific evidence the first line treatment of insomnia disorder is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).
The present Summit will deepen the new guidelines and discuss the need for reducing the gap between evidence-based recommendations and clinical practice, which is still in almost all countries dominated by pharmacotherapy.
Furthermore, authors will discuss the clinical characteristics of the disorder of insomnia with a specific focus on cognitive and emotional factors.
Finally, the first line treatment for the disorder will be overviewed with specific attention to psychophysiological mechanisms associated with the changes promoted by the intervention.
